5 Tips to Getting Better at Photography

By: Zara Faride

1. Use the rule of thirds

This method: the rule of thirds, is great if you want to take eye-catching photos. To use this method, imagine that there are two lines going vertically and horizontally. Think of it like a tic tac toe board. As you look at your imaginary tic tac toe board, you’ll find a focal point somewhere created from the squares (created from the lines). The center square is a great focal point to start off with.

2. Use a filter

It’s totally okay to use a filter of your photos, but make sure you take a filter that fits the “mood”. Use a cold tone filter to show power in your photo or use a warm tone filter to show the coziness in your photo. There are many things you can do with filters.

3. Play with editing

When editing your photos, make sure you play with the lighting, colour and the sharpness of the photo. These three tools can give different approaches to your photo. You can take a photo of anything and editing can change up the “mood” in your photo. When editing the colours in your photo, make sure they have some sort of theme. There should be at least 1 colour that appears a lot in the photo. Take that one colour (or more) and make them standout in the photo, but not too much. When editing the lighting in your photo, make sure the lighting matches the “mood” of the colours. If there are many dark and scary colours in your photo, then put a dark lighting. If there are many light and happy colours in your photo, then put a bright lighting. Lastly, when editing the sharpness of the photo, it really is just your preference and choice.

4. Change perspectives

Changing up perspectives in your photo may not be your thing, but it’s always nice to try. Changing up the perspectives in pictures can create really cool photos. This tip gives a interesting way to look at things. Sometimes it can be boring to see an object ( that we’ve seen before) in a “normal” point of view. We usually see things from the front, back or side, but not from underneath or up top. In photography, it’s good to capture the interesting looks of things and the way they look in different angles.

5. Capture details

Take the object you’re taking a photo of and capture one detail you want people to focus on. Doing this can create a more professional and well thought out looking photo. It’s also nice to see a photo and being able to not see so many things at once. The details of your photo is what makes your photo beautiful.

I hope these tips helped you become a bit of a better photographer. Remember, these tips are only to help you get better, you can do whatever you want in photography. No rules are needed in art.
